Waste Disposal and Management Approvals

The Environmental Protection Act requires that a ministry approval be obtained before using, operating, establishing, altering, enlarging or extending a waste management system or a waste disposal site.

Operations or activities that require approval include but are not limited to:

    * a landfill or an incinerator;
    * processing someone else's waste at your facility;
    * waste transfer and processing facilities;
    * biosolids spreading sites;
    * waste haulers or waste management systems;
    * haulers and spreaders of biosolids and septage;
    * mobile PCB destruction;
    * mobile site decontamination systems.

Driver training guidelines for drivers who transport municipal waste, liquid industrial waste or hazardous waste.

The driver of a waste transportation vehicle used for the transportation of municipal waste, liquid industrial waste or hazardous waste shall be trained in;

i. the operation of the vehicle and waste management equipment,
ii. relevant waste management legislation, regulations and guidelines,
iii. major environmental concerns pertaining to the waste to be handled,
iv. occupational health and safety concerns pertaining to the waste to be handled, and
v. emergency management procedures for the wastes to be handled.
